Supplemental Educational Services

The Supplemental Educational Services (SES) program offers free tutoring to all children who qualify. Tutoring services offer students extra help in academic subjects such as reading, language arts, and mathematics. SES services vary in schedule and are provided outside the regular school day, before and after school or on weekends. There are many providers from which to select a program that best fits your child’s needs and your family’s schedule.

The SES program is apart of the NCLB Act, and is funded by the federal government. There is no cost to you. Federal funds that pay providers for their tutoring services are limited. If the requests for free tutoring exceed available funding, priority is based on greatest academic need.

Your child is eligible if he or she attends a school that has been categorized as a Program Improvement School for two or more years and is considered low income (qualifies for free or reduced price meals). This categorization is based on the performance on annual standardized tests of all the students who attend your child’s school, not your child’s individual performance.

With available federal funding, we are able to serve 1,677 students during the 2014-2015 school year. Should more applications be received, priority will be given to those students with the greatest academic need.

The district held two provider fairs in August which allowed parents the opportunity to speak to the individual providers and ask questions. If a parent was unable to attend that meeting and submit a tutoring application for their child, a packet with information on the SES program and an application will be mailed to the parents in September. Tutoring applications may be turned in at your school or the Educational Services department at the district office.
